  ATTENDANTS
Honor your honor attendants by steering away from "regular" bridesmaids' gowns and, instead, allow your attendants to select gowns in the same, or matching colors.
Limiting the Bridesmaids will help if you have a tight budget. Less flowers, less gifts, etc. etc.
But Will They Love You Tomorrow? When selecting the gowns for your attendants, keep the cost in mind, so your "honor" doesn't become a burden.
Break With Convention by mixing the sexes. Consider a "Best Woman," or a "Man of Honor." Throw a coed bachelor/bachelorette/shower.
Big Girl . . . Little Girl Get a great look by having a seamstress create the flower girl's dress in the same design as the bride's gown, just smaller.

  ATTIRE
What's under counts.Make sure to have your undergarments with you when you try on your gown for fittings.
If you are set on your attendants all wearing the same dress, allow them some flexibility to choose their own shoes, hair and makeup.
Ask for a "Group" Discount , when purchasing your gown and those of your maids. It never hurts to ask.
Bridesmaids' gowns are far less expensive than wedding gowns, so, if you are in a budget crunch, consider ordering a bridesmaid's gown in ivory or white and wear it as your wedding gown.
Oh Their Aching Feet. Allow your groomsmen and dads to wear their own dress shoes in lieu of rentals. They not only will save some money, but will no doubt be more comfortable.
But Will They Love You Tomorrow? When selecting the gowns for your attendants, keep the cost in mind, so your "honor" doesn't become a burden.
Dress for Less by checking the web, newspapers and consignment shops for never-worn, or once-worn gowns.
More for Less Buying your wedding gown, bridesmaidsī dresses and mothers gowns may give you better value than buying everything in a different shop.
Flip 'n Flop If yours is an on-the-beach wedding, supply your guests with flip flops for their trek through the sand.
Comfort First When choosing your undergarments, let beauty take a back seat to comfort.
Dress for the season Once you decide your wedding date, start thinking into the future for type of attire appropriate to that time of year.
Just to Dye For If the you find it difficult to finding the right color shoes to match your outfit, you can find the design in say white or ivory, and then the shoes can be dyed.
All That Jazz If you find a wedding gown that's too simple for your taste, but that you really like, find a seamstess who will add some trimmings in lace or a color.
Limit the Look Try not to look at too many dresses at one time or in one shop. Try not to overload your memory banks.

  BEAUTY & MAKEUP, THE BRIDE
Swatch It When you go shopping for party favors, decorations and flowers, bring along ribbon in the colors of your wedding. That will make it easier to find items that match.
Brides' Maids on a Budget? Consider less expensive prom, homecoming dresses, or formal gowns as an alternative
Getting Married Outdoors? Donīt forget sunscreen, which you should apply before you put on your makeup to avoid becoming a burning beauty.
Cut It Out. Short hair can grow quickly, so donīt schedule your wedding haircut too far before your wedding date.
Presto Change-O . . . To give herself a "new" look, the bride may elect to do a makeup switch. Black and white photos don't lend themselves well to soft colors, so a switch to more intense colors and darker lipsticks will do the trick.
Make No Big Changes (e.g., hair straightening, perm, hair coloring) right befopre your wedding day. Leave ample time for "do-overs" if things don't work out the way you planned.
Cover That Tat If you are so inclined, let your makeup artist suggest a product that will cover your tattoo. There are several, such as Magic from CoverMark Cosmetics.
On One Condition Skip using a conditioner on the day of your wedding. Conditioned hair can be soft and slippery and may not hold your hairstyle throughout your long wedding day. It's preferable to substitute a deep conditioning treatment about a week before "W" Day.
Yummy Lips Make your "I Do" kiss sweeter by using flavored lip balm over your lipstick.

  BEAUTY & MAKEUP, THE GROOM
Keep the Groom Looking Great by packing a bag of beauty supplies he can use on the wedding day (e.g., shaving cream, skin cleanser, cologne)

  BUDGET & FINANCES
Cost-Cutting with do-it-yourself assembly of your invitations works, but keep in mind that this is an arduous, time-consuming task, so you'll need to balance the savings against the value of your time and energy and may choose to leave it to the pros.
Bridesmaids' gowns are far less expensive than wedding gowns, so, if you are in a budget crunch, consider ordering a bridesmaid's gown in ivory or white and wear it as your wedding gown.
Brides' Maids on a Budget? Consider less expensive prom, homecoming dresses, or formal gowns as an alternative
Trimming Your Flower Budget For centerpieces, use potted flowers or plants. You might even consider growing them yourself.
Give Yourself Credit. Using a separate credit card for wedding-related expenditures is a really good way to keep track of your budget. Some cards will even give you points toward htel stays and/or airline mileage.
But Will They Love You Tomorrow? When selecting the gowns for your attendants, keep the cost in mind, so your "honor" doesn't become a burden.
Dress for Less by checking the web, newspapers and consignment shops for never-worn, or once-worn gowns.
Downpayment Please Be wary of any wedding professional who insists on "everything up front."
Flat Fee Wedding Consultant If you are concerned about sticking to your budget, hire a wedding planner who charges a flat fee, not a percentage of the total cost.
Wine Not? There are good wines available to suit almost every budget. Consider adding the elegant touch of wine(s) to your menu.
Got a Budget for Drinks? Make sure that you have the opportunity to select your wine and/or champagne. Some catering managers will let you bring your own drinks for a sit-down meal. These can be purchased at wine a spirits or ask the catering manager to order for you at trade prices.
Do-It-Yourself Liquor Check with your catering manager if you bring your own, because there may be a corkage charge.
Carry It - Double-Duty Re-use your ceremony flower arrangements. Have them carried into the reception hall to decorate tables and entrances.
Cake Cost Cutting Instead of an elaborate wedding cake, consider having your baker, or caterer, create a small wedding cake "for show" and a sheet cake (much less expensive) to be cut up for dessert. As an alternate, you can cut out the big cake an serve another, less expensive dessert, such as cookies or ice cream.
To Your Credit It's wise to make all your wedding purchases with a credit card. It's the safest way to go and the easiest when it comes to returns or disagreements.
Gratuity Charges Be aware that many sites and caterers automatically add "gratuity" of 15-20% of the cost of the meal and bar.
Deposits There are laws in some states that say a deposit given to secure a time, service, or product is not refundable. Make sure of your decisions before you put your money down.
More Double Duty For cost-cutting, use your bridal bouquet and the bridesmaids' bouquets on the head table at your reception, the table card and/or the guest book/gifts table.
One On One If money is tight, your bridesmaids can each carry a single "perfect" bloom, instead of an expensive bouquet.
Green Saves Green Using more greenery, more tulle, more ribbon and more baby's breath for decorating will be far less expensive that lots of flowers and still very effective for decorating.
A Cut Above Buying fresh, cut flowers from a flower wholesaler or market, is another cost-cutting tip. Placed in a pretty container, several cut anemones, tulips or roses, look beautiful.
A Drink, but not on-the-House Consider a cash bar instead of an open bar.

  CAKE
An Interesting Alternative is to use different shapes and different heights of layers.

Petite Fours & Cupcakes Give new twist to a traditional wedding cake, by serving individual "cakes" to your guests.
Preserving Your Wedding Cake to be enjoyed on your first anniversary, is easy of done correctly. Wrap the top layer really well in plastic wrap. Then re-cover in aluminum foil. Don't use just foil because it may leave a metallic taste. Store the cake in the back of the freezer where the temperature remains constant.
To Top It Off Borrow a cake-topper . . . a close friend, or if you're lucky and they saved it, from your parents or grandparents.
Yummy Times Two
Add an interesting twist to your wedding cake by having your baker create different flavors for the tiers. Your guests may then be served a slice of each of the flavors.

  CEREMONY
Runners, Not. Save yourself the possible headache of you or a member of your bridal party tripping. Somehow runners never seem to stay put.
Run Run Aisle runners are used only for the bride, so that her gown doesn't get mud, dirt and grass on her train. It should be rolled out after the last people in the procession have reached the alter. The bride and her escort should be the only ones walking on it.
Ring Those Bells If you are getting married in church you can commission the bell ringers to announce your big day in a way that will add special atmosphere to your event.

  CONSULTANTS
Flat Fee Wedding Consultant If you are concerned about sticking to your budget, hire a wedding planner who charges a flat fee, not a percentage of the total cost.

  DECOR
Consider seasonal fruits as your centerpieces, or incorporated into them.
Table runners make for lovely table decor, wither with, or in lieu of centerpieces.
Take It From the Kids, and design a poster of the wedding couple (i.e., an engagement photo), and have guests sign the poster, as they enter.
As They Arrive, Capture Your Guests in a photo (like they do when you board a cruise ship) and, after the wedding, add the photos to your Guest Book.
Live Centerpieces Consider using small, potted, blooming plants on each of your tables. Single pots or a combination of several pots of various sizes, each tied with a bright bow, make a lovely display, one that guests can take home and continue enjoy.
Up High Decoration Helium filled balloons in colors that match the wedding theme can add real oomph to your reception venue.
Light Up My Life If you are planning to use candles on your tables as part of, or as your centerpiece, check the burning time. A candle that's "out" after an hour or two just won't do.
Centerpieces On What? To add an added, elegant touch, place your centerpiece on a mirror "plate." This will make the centerpieces look larger.
Yummy Centerpieces Combine a wicker basket (there are so many to choose from and they are relatively inexpensive) with edibles like cookies, muffins, honey cake or zucchini bread. Fresh or dried fruits will also work well.
You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby Decorate your cake table or guest book table with photographs of the bride and groom as children, and other family photos (wedding photos, if you have them).
Floating Centerpieces Small candles can be floated in a large bowl filled with water. Add a few flower or rose petals to the water to complete the effect.
All Aglow Hurricane lamps, which may be rented inexpensively, make lovely centerpieces. Decorate them with greenery around the base, and silk or fresh flowers to add color.
Up Up and Away Balloons have always been synonymous with festivity. They make great centerpieces for an informal wedding.
Bright Lights Centerpieces You create a glowing centerpiece by bunching many candles, of different colors and heights, arranged in unusual candlestick or other holders.
Interesting Centerpieces Use rich color and texture to create an interesting centerpiece. Use brightly colored fruits such as pomegranates and lemons, or, in season, gourds of many fall colors.
Deck the Halls If the walls in your wedding "hall" aren't the loveliest, cover them with drapes of fabric from ceiling to floor. Use colors that coordinate with your flowers and attendants' dresses. The fabric can be used after the reception to make table clothes for your own home or to give as gifts.
Kiss - Kiss Make a card for each of the married couples at the reception and put them in a pretty basket. When people are calling out for the bride and groom to kiss, pull a name out of the basket and ask that couple to demonstrate "how-to" to the new couple.
A New Twist on Table Numbers When setting up your seating arrangement, identify your tables with wedding related words such as Love, Cherish, Honor, Happiness, Forever, Peace, Companion, etc. It adds a special touch to your beautiful centerpieces instead of a big tacky number in the middle.
With thanks to Julie E. Murphy from Maine

  FLOWERS
Preserve the Memories of your bouquet by drying the flowers and "converting" them into potpourri or pressing them in the pages of a heavy book.
Live Centerpieces Consider using small, potted, blooming plants on each of your tables. Single pots or a combination of several pots of various sizes, each tied with a bright bow, make a lovely display, one that guests can take home and continue enjoy.
Aroma and Elegance Fresh, cut flowers will make any table look lovely. Choose a single bud or a copious arrangement, cut flowers add elegance and stye when used as a centerpiece.

Don't Forget About Gifts For the mothers of the bride and groom who have been so helpful in getting you to your special day can be surprised at the reception with a bouquet of flowers or a gift from the happy couple.
Keeping Track of Gifts and Help with Table Arrangement Place the name, address and phone number of each guest on a 3 by 5 index card. Store the cards alphabetically. As you open your wedding gifts, list the gift information on the appropriate card. When it comes time to write your thank you notes, all the information you'll need will be at your finger tips. Incidentally, you may use the same cards that you're using for creating your table arrangements.
Thanks Mom. Thanks Dad No wedding is complete without thank you's. Floral arrangements in your parents' hotel rooms or at their homes, the day before the wedding, is a lovely way to say "You're really special to us!" Make sure to include a personal note.
Love Your Guests to "Pieces" Breakaway centerpieces for your reception are a lovely way to say "thank you" to each of your guests. Individual bud vases, ornaments, or small plants all gathered in one basket can be taken home by guests as a memento.

  HIRING WEDDING PROFESSIONALS
You Have a Friend at the Better Business Bureau. Most wedding professionals are honest and trustworthy, but is still doesn't hurt to make a call before you hire.
Is It You? When hiring wedding professionals, ask if the person with you have your interview (or that you see, or listen to) will be who is actually be at your wedding.
Downpayment Please Be wary of any wedding professional who insists on "everything up front."

  MISCELLANEOUS
Tradition Has It that a chimney sweep brings good luck to newlyweds. If you don't know any friendly chimney sweeps who will do the job - check in your local directory for contact numbers - then some singing telegram companies may be able to help out.
Alcohol On-the-Go Keep in mind that if you are expecting to make a toast with champagne or consume any alcohol while you are en route, a limousine is the only vehicle in which alcohol consumption is legal.

  MUSIC
Music Music Music.Wedding music sets the mood, so make sure that the venue you choose and your music providers "match." Hardwood floors, high ceilings and lots of windows tend to create great acoustics.

  PARTY FAVORS
What You Do ThereAt a rehearsal dinner, family and friends toast the couple, the bride and groom can give thank-you gifts to their attendants, and your families can get to know one another better if they havenīt spent much time together prior to the wedding.
Replace Party Favors with a short personal note to each of your guests and place them at every seat. More work, but so much more personal!
Bake Heart-Shaped Cookies and use icing to match your wedding color. Wrap cookies individually. Tie and tag with each guest's name and table number. This makes a unique place card and a party favor "wrapped" into one yummy package.
Wedding Favors Coordinated stationery or note cards are an appreciated party favor to give your guests.
Favors and more Favors Party favors can be almost any little gift which you feel your guests will enjoy. Consider the "standard" lace bag with Jordan almonds, or any other candy (stay away from things that melt), votive candles, small potted plants (in your wedding's color scheme), miniature bells, and silk or dried flowers.
Plant a Favor or Centerpiece For an earth-friendly gesture, tree seedlings ca be used as party favors and/or centerpieces (that also serves as a balloon weight and decorations).
Party Favor Donations Instead of shower or wedding favors, the bridal couple can make a donation to the charity of their choice, in honor of their guests.
Double Duty Consider using your centerpiece as a party favor. Have your florist create a "break-away," which is a centerpiece made up of small bunches of flowers (even one or two stems), that can be divided and given to the guests at the table.

  PHOTOGRAPHY & PHOTOGRAPHS
Get ready in advance with a spot for your family photos. Set up a backdrop somewhere out-of-the-way where it will be logistically easy to direct small groups of guests and get their photos taken during the reception.
Click Click Take along a digital (or regular) camera to record the wedding gowns and attendant dresses from which you'll be making your choices. In that way you can review them in the peace, quiet and comfort of your home and get the opinions of others who can't come along shopping.
Oh So Hungry If you'll be taking photos before your reception, keep guests happy while they're waiting by providing hors d'oeuvres like crackers and cheese and veggies and dip.
Pristine Pictures Make sure to instruct your photographer and/or videographer to take a few photos of the reception site, before your guests arrive and while everything is still pristine.

  PLANNING
Save on Bridal Magazines by subscribing (always discounted) instead of buying them.
Work It Out in Advance It may be the best strategy for the bridal couple to make a "Best Case Scenario list" before they talk to their parents and/or friends about their wedding. At least in this way, they two will be in sync.
Confirmations of any important wedding arrangements made by you or others should be confirmed in writing.
Limit the Look Try not to look at too many dresses at one time or in one shop. Try not to overload your memory banks.
Fabric Swatches Take a few. They will prove very useful to coordinate your wedding colors with your florist, baker, shoe store, etc.
Child's Play If you have decided to include lots of children in your wedding, ask about a spare room at the church and/or your reception venue. There, the kids can be entertained, "cool down," and, if you choose, can even have their own kids' meals.
Consider the Many Options An "alternative" wedding site may be just what you are looking for, so think about:: Parks, public gardens, museums, trains, boats, mountaintop, beach, a field or meadow, hot air balloon, hotel, public hall, a tent, historic homes/mansions/estates, inns and B & B.
No Surprises, Please If your caterer is providing dishes, silverware and glasses, ask to see a sample, so there are no unpleasant surprises on your wedding day. This also holds true for napkins and tablecloths.

  PRE-WEDDING PARTIES
A Helping Hand for the Bride – A Wedding Shower Project
The shower hostess may ask each guest to write their name and address on an envelope which she supplies. After the gifts are opened, the envelopes are collected. These will be used by the bride to mail her shower thank you notes to her guests. To add more interest and a small "reward" to the process, before the envelopes are collected, one or more are chosen and those guests receive a "thank you for the thank you" gift. This not only is a pleasant project, but also serves as a wonderful time saver for the bride-to-be.
Non-Stripper Entertainment is available for both Bachelorette and Bachelor Parties. Consider hiring a magician, comedian, psychic (fortunes teller), or a beauty consultant (for makeovers).
Shower Power. The host, or hosts, of a shower should need to discuss the division of the shower's cost early in the process,, so that there are no misunderstanding later on.

  RECEPTION
Do-it-yourself can work well at the reception location you select. If you are watching your budget, bring and use as many of "your own" things as possible, such as linens and centerpieces. Make sure to check with your caterer, so you're both on the same page.
A wedding breakfast can be a lovely but less expensive reception option. The emphasis will be on your commitment and celebration and you will still be sharing it with the important people in your life.

  RECEPTION, TOASTS
Toast Not When toasting, the bride and groom DO NOT raise their glasses like everyone else. They are the ones being honored and therefore do not toast to themselves. And speaking of toasts, this ritual was actually taken from a French custom. Bread was put in the bottom of wine to collect all the sediments. When the wine was gone, some lucky person got to eat the bread or toast.
