Traditional wedding photography style is portrait-based. That means that a majority of the photos
are planned and candid shots are at a minimum. Photographers who use this style trust their experience and
know what poses work successfully with what lighting effects. They have spoken to their clients in advance,
and have determined what photos must be included. It may be said that traditional style photography in
some ways has a fantasy feeling, meaning that lighting effects, soft-focus filters, and retouching, often
makes the subjects of the photos look better than they really do.
The traditional wedding photography style has been the most popular for years, but quickly coming up on
its heels is photojournalist style wedding photography. The photojournalist approach is much
more unobtrusive, as it creates a picture story of your wedding day. The photos actually "tell" the story
and walk you visually through the events of the day.
Traditional photographers usually have traditional packages that include albums of photos that
you select from proofs. Packages can be an easy, stress-free way to order photos. Photojournalistic
photographers usually will allow you to design a custom package and, today, some even offer you
the negatives, for you to do with as you wish.
Traditional and photojournalist photography require different skill sets.
In the past, a couple needed to choose one style, or the other. Fortunately for today's bridal couple,
there are many photographers who feel that it is important to photograph both
traditional and photojournalistic images, and, there are many who are fully capable of
doing so.
Before deciding on the style, or styles that suit you, it's important to check credentials and
see samples. You should not only like a photographer's work, but also feel comfortable with his
or her personality. The best way to see if you "make a connection" with a photographer is to look
at his or her work and see if the photos capture your interest, making you eager to turn the page,
or click your mouse to see more. If the photographer's photos manage to involve you in the weddings
of strangers, you have "met your match" and will, in all likelihood, be pleased with the end product.
