There are many individuals who can legally perform wedding ceremonies, but who they are varies from place to place. To be absolutely sure, every bridal couple should inquire as to what's legal where they will be holding their ceremony. Not only do the laws about wedding officiants vary, but some are also very unusual. For example, in Colorado, if a bridal couple have the proper paperwork, they can perform their own wedding ceremony.

There is one popular misconception that bears refuting. Many people are under the impression that a ship's captain can legally perform wedding ceremonies on board, at sea. This is a misconception which may have its roots in the TV show "The Love Boat." But, that's TV, not real life.
